Can you take a swim with dolphins in Spain?
Spain is a country with miles of beautiful sea coast which are teeming with beautiful groups of dolphins swimming within sight. To protect these dolphins, Spain has laws restricting humans from swimming with or touching them. If you came to this page wondering how you could swim with dolphins in Spain, we do have some suggestions for you.
1. Take a boat tour to see the dolphins. There are many tour companies that can take you out on a boat along Spain’s Atlantic Coast. From there, you can observe many beautiful dolphins swimming. Species included bottlenose dolphins, common and striped dolphins, and possibly a few others. The boats are not allowed to get too close to the animals, but you can get a nice view. There are also dolphin-viewing tours available in the Canary Islands, but since it is a Spanish territory, the same anti-swimming with dolphins laws apply.
2. Take a trip to Portugal. The Zoomarine Park in Algarve, Portugal has a program where you can swim with dolphins for 30 minutes after attending a 40 minute educational lecture about dolphin conservation. You can also travel to the Alzores islands to swim with dolphins. Since it is legal in Portugal, you can even try to swim with wild dolphins. It is recommended that you do this in the summer, since other seasons can be pretty cold.
3. Take a trip to France – Not far from the border with Spain is Collioure, France. It has an aquarium where you can swim with dolphins. Just like the tour in Portugal, it involves an educational lecture followed by a short swim with dolphins. It is legal and you should have no problem doing it. If I recall correctly, the dolphins are not quite wild, so they will be very friendly towards visitors. You can also pay to have a photo taken with the dolphins.
4. Take a trip to Italy – Like Portugal, Italy has a ZooMarine aquarium. It’s swim with dolphins tour is almost identical to the one in Portugal. It’s a bit far from Spain, though, so the other options are probably better.
Remember – swimming with Dolphins is not legal in Spain, so don’t try it. Also be aware of laws that prohibit boats from getting dangerously close to dolphins. If you want to experience the joy of swimming with dolphins, obey the law and travel somewhere other than Spain to do it.
