Swimming With Dolphins in Egypt

Have you ever dreamed of swimming in the water with dolphins, the most beautiful and intelligent creatures in the seas? I had that dream for many years, and I finally achieved it.  I was able to go to Egypt and swim with dolphins.   It was the most amazing experience of my life.

In the calm waters off the coast of Egypt in the Red Sea, one can swim with wild dolphins.  Most of the dolphins in the area are Spinner Dolphins – a small dolphin species found in many tropical waters around the world.  Spinner dolphins are known for their acrobatic ability to spin as they jump through the air.

Several different tour companies operate boats that take tourists to the dolphin reef.  When hiring a tour company to swim with dolphins in Egypt, it is important to look for tour companies that employ local people who have experience with the area.  For my experience, I took a tour with a boat operated by Egyptians who grew up in the local fishing community.  They were very knowledgeable about the waters of the area since they had lived there for their whole life.

Although the dolphins in the reef are wild, they are very friendly.  I was able to snorkel in the water with dolphins passing very close to me.  They are not afraid of humans and will not run away.  It was a delight to see such beautiful and intelligent creatures swimming around me.  Swimming with dolphins in Egypt was simply awesome.

In addition to Spinner Dolphins, one can observe other animals in the reef.  I saw sea turtles, rays, color fish, and of course beautiful growths in the coral.  Although I didn’t see one that day, I’ve heard that tourists sometimes encounter rare dugong in the waters around there.

Egypt is in the tropics so coldness is not a problem.  It was also pretty warm, so all I needed was a bathing suit.  The weather in the area is usually calm and visibility is great. Amid the beautiful turquoise-colored water the fish were stunning.

Before the tour, the guide told us that because the dolphins are wild he could not guarantee that every tour would be able to see them.  He said the success rate was 70 to 80 percent – which is pretty good in my opinion.  Our tour was within that lucky percentage and there were many dolphins!

If you’ve got the chance, definitely consider visiting Egypt to swim with the dolphins!
